Sad Girl

8 x 10” Drypoint, 2024

Sad Girl, a drypoint etching, reflects on the nature of memory and the power of self-compassion. Within the image, a young girl, portrayed with a head full of pink foam rollers and a heart-wrenching pout, gives a strong sense of melancholy and emotion. The slight ruffle of her t-shirt and the sadness in her eyes add a layer of sentimentality, inviting the viewers to empathize with this nameless girl. Through the intricate lines of the drypoint process, I sought to convey the complexity of emotions felt by my younger self, without necessarily revealing the cause of her sadness.

As the printing process progressed, the plate ceased to pick up the image, symbolizing a sort of ephemeral nature of memory and sense of self. Like the fading image on the plate, our memories of self and sense of identity are constantly reshaped and redefined over time, leaving behind some traces of our past selves, but also making space for something new.
